DEPARTMENTAL PROFILE :COMMERCE Duliajan College is a premier institute of higher education in Duliajan established on 1st August -1969.The honorable founder members dreamt to make Duliajan College as full-fledge college .With the initiative of founder Principal Sri Purna kanta Hazarika , this dream came to an existence on 1st August-1991,which cater the long –felt needs of the locality for imparting quality commerce education . The commerce stream was initiated with just 7(seven) students in B.Com standard and 113 students in H.S. Standards in the in the evening section. The college authority acquired the requisite permission from both Dibrugarh University as well as Assam Higher Education Council. Initially ,the commerce stream run with the support of a few existing teacher of Duliajan College and personnel from Oil India Limited , Duliajan.The contribution of few persons cannot be denied for initiation of Commerce stream, namely former Vice –principal Late.Biren Chutia,Sri Gupi Tamulee (Assamese Department ),Sri Sachindra Nath Saikia and Mrs.Anjali Pathak (Economics Department),Late.Indra Prasad Buragohain and Sri Suresh Borah(Mathematics Department), Sri Nabin Chandra Gohain and Sri Amiya Khanikar from English Department ,Mrs. Pranatee Banerjee(Bengali Department )and few other notable professor from Duliajan College teaching fraternity.Besides these ,notable personnel from Oil India Limited worth mentioning are Sri Abhijit Chattacharjee,Sri Nilangshu Sen ,Sri Pankaj Choudhary ,Late Durga Awargal ,Sri Munin Bahadur Chetry in the limelight. After one year i.e.in the 1992,Sri Tapan Dutta,Dayananda Nath and Mrs.Gitalee Mohan joined as faculty members in the Commerce Strem .Although Ms.Mohan left Duliajan College after one year and she was later replaced by Navajit Dutta . To Strengthen the Commerce Stream, in the year 1996 four teachers viz. Sri Jitendra kumar Tiwari,Sri Lok Bikesh Gogoi,Sri Porag Saikia,and Mrs. Malarani Sen Gupta have joined to extend their service .Finally on 25th March 1998, the commerce Stream was taken under Government Deficit –grant –in-aid scheme. Dr.Deepak Gogoi (now expired) Sri Mrinmoy Kumar Boruah, Sri Pabitra Sonowal and Mrs. Tapatee Bhattacharjee joined with the stream in the year 1998 and as a result the total teaching members in the department extended to 10(ten). Apart from this , Sri Sujit Kumar Deb, Mrs. Mayuri Sharmah, Sri Nipon Hazarika and Sri Ramesh Chutia has rendered their valuable service on contractual basis as per the need of the departments. From the year 2000, two major subjects have been introduced in our commerce department, i.e. (1) Accounting and finance and (2) marketing . Every year students pass out with flying colours from the department of Commerce. In addition to the regular courses, from the year 2018 Commerce department introduced CAT coaching centre. ICMAI (Institute of Cost and Management Accounting Association of India) examination centre begin in Duliajan College with active participation of Commerce department and Oil india limited (OIL).This centre is one of the three examination centers in entire North-Eastern region. Duliajan College Commerce Forum: Duliajan College Commerce Forum was formed in the year 2003 for the development of commerce stream. The Principal , Vice- Principal, all the commerce faculty members as well as all the regular students of commerce departments are the members of this forum. The main aims and objectives of the forum are to pursue co-curriculum activities like : arrangement of commerce exhibition , career counseling session , seminar , symposium, workshop etc. from time to time for the benefit of the students . Besides these , Duliajan college Commerce Forum also provides Book Bank facilities as well as provides financial support to the economically feeble commerce students from time to time. Activities: This department is fully furnished and well equipped with a strong departmental library. The Commerce Department Library consists of 652 text books,reference books and other supplementary issues.Every year industrial field work programme is being arranged with the students of B.Com final year. Besides these,excursion programme is also being organized with the students of Commerce stream.Guest lecture,career counseling,guidance form resource persons also being arranged every year.Department of Commerce participate in Annual Wall mazagine competition(departmental wall mazagine named as Vanijya Prabaha) and it is a matter of pride that subsequently in the year 2016 and 2017 Vanijya Prabaha secured the position as the best departmental wall magazine of the College.In the year 2005 and 2006 Department of also released its annual journal Vanijya Prabaha. On 6th December 2006,Department of Commerce organized a State Level Seminar on the topic “Feasibility and Effectiveness of Ancillary Industries in providing opportunities for self employment”.Various academicians,industrial personel from Government of Assam and local entrepreneur participated and contributed their views and expert opinion in that seminar.On 30th October – 2010,Department of Commerce Organized one day workshop with the sponsoredship of Oil India Limited on the topic “Focusing Entrepreneurship towards Employability”.Various Organisation specially local youth and local entrepreneurs took active part in that workshop.The Department of Commerce also arranges guest lecturers from respective professional person,Local entrepreneurs and government officials.Workshops with the support of personnel from District Industrial Office from Tinsukia and Dibrugarh Districts,SIRD office , CA personnel are the notable programme which are arrange by department of Commerce from Time to time. Duliajan College Commerce Alumni Association: Ex-students of Commerce department are the real gems of the society starting from government and corporate workers to media workers,lawyer,practitioner,entrepreneur,businessman,elected executive of many associations and many more and above all a noble human being.Targeting the programme of Duliajan College Golden Jubilee,the ex-students of Commerce department form an association named as Duliajan College Commerce Alumni Association.This association has boldly come forward for active involvement and also took initiative to memorize this occasion by releasing of a special issue of Vanijya Jyoti.
