The department of Physics is one of the oldest departments of Duliajan College, established in the year 1969. The first HoD of the department was the eminent scientist Dr. Jayanti Chutia who later became the Director of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) , the first major research institution in North East India. The first batch of undergraduate BSc Honours in Physics under Dibrugarh University graduated in 1992. Currently, the department has four permanent faculties and one laboratory assistant. The department has a MoU with Physics department, D.H.S.K. College, Dibrugarh which has proved to benefit the students of both colleges. For the wellbeing and all-round development of the students, the faculties of the department also provide mentorship to its students under the Mentor-Mentee program. Along with teaching the Undergraduate students, the faculties are also engaged in teaching students of the Higher Secondary section. The alumni produced by the department over the years are placed in various places including the prestigious Dibrugarh University.

Facilities:
The department has its own building with classrooms having ICT facility and well equipped laboratories including a designated Dark room required for specific experiments. Another laboratory for application in experiments of Nanophysics is under construction. The department also has a fully stocked and updated departmental library. The departmental library has 225 books for Degree courses, 180 books for HS course and 130 miscellaneous books

Future Plan:
*A Nanophysics laboratory is under construction, which aims at engaging students in research activities.
*In view of the “Skill India Mission”, the department plans to convert into a semi self-financed department by opening skill based courses. With the same aim, already an Add-on course has been started by the department.
